Hack 11 · Stop Wasting Money

The Unsubscribe Purge

The unsubscribe purge is a single sitting where you unsubscribe from every retail and deal email in your inbox. Marketing emails are not information, they are scheduled invitations to spend, and removing them removes the trigger before the temptation starts. Most people see their small impulse purchases drop within the first month, worth several hundred dollars a year.

How to do it

  1. Set a short timer and work through retail and deal emails in one pass.
  2. Unsubscribe from all of them without stopping to keep favourites.
  3. Unsubscribe from anything new the first time it arrives.

What it typically saves

Typically $300 to $900 a year, depending on how busy your inbox was.

Questions people ask

What if I miss a genuine deal?

You will occasionally, and it costs less than the impulse purchases the emails caused. When you actually need something, you can go looking deliberately.

Should I keep my favourite stores?

Those are usually the ones costing you most, because they are the ones you act on. Purging everything is what makes the exercise work.

Is a filter as good as unsubscribing?

Not quite. A folder you check is still a shopping trip, whereas unsubscribing removes the prompt entirely.
