Hack 10 · Savings Foundations

Cash for Fun

Cash for fun means withdrawing your entire discretionary budget as physical cash at the start of the week and using only that for eating out, entertainment, and shopping. Handing over paper money creates a friction that card taps do not, so you feel the spending as it happens. People who switch typically cut discretionary spending by 20 to 30 percent.

How to do it

  1. Decide your weekly fun budget and withdraw it as cash on the same day each week.
  2. Use only that cash for discretionary spending, with no card top-ups.
  3. When the cash is gone, stop until the next week.

What it typically saves

Typically 20 to 30 percent lower discretionary spending.

Questions people ask

What if I run out midweek?

That is the mechanism working. The point is to hit the limit and feel it, which is exactly what an unlimited card prevents.

Does this work for online spending?

Less well, which is partly why it helps. If most of your discretionary spending is online, pair it with a separate prepaid balance instead.

What do I do with leftover cash?

Bank it rather than rolling it forward. Rolling it over quietly inflates next week's budget until the limit stops meaning anything.
