Hack 57 · Grow Your Earnings
Negotiate Pay Up—Every Gig Counts
Negotiating means never accepting a published or first-offered rate without countering, on every gig, contract, and project. Most clients and platforms expect a counter and have room built into the offer. Habitual negotiators typically earn 15 to 25 percent more per gig than people who accept the first number.
How to do it
- Counter every first offer, politely and without apology.
- Justify the counter with your experience and what the client gets.
- Be willing to decline, which is what makes the counter credible.
What it typically saves
Typically 15 to 25 percent more per gig.
Questions people ask
Will I lose work by negotiating?
Occasionally, and usually the worst-paying work. Clients who withdraw over a polite counter tend to be difficult in other ways too.
How much should I counter by?
Enough to matter and little enough to be credible. A modest, specific counter succeeds far more often than a dramatic one.
What if I have no leverage?
You usually have more than you think, because replacing you costs the client time. Even without leverage, asking is free.
