Hack 26 · Effortless Budgeting

Budget Buddy Challenge

The budget buddy challenge pairs you with someone else on a shared money goal, with a regular check-in you both commit to. Accountability roughly doubles the odds of finishing a goal, and it turns a private chore into something social. It costs nothing and works on almost any money habit you are trying to build.

How to do it

  1. Find one person willing to check in regularly.
  2. Agree on a specific, shared goal with an end date.
  3. Check in on a fixed schedule, and say honestly how it went.

What it typically saves

Roughly doubles your odds of finishing a money goal you set.

Questions people ask

Do we need the same goal?

No, only the same check-in. Different goals work fine as long as you both report honestly on the same schedule.

What if I do not want to share my finances?

You do not have to. Share progress toward the goal rather than balances or income, which is enough for accountability to work.

What if my buddy drops out?

Find another or continue solo with a public commitment. The mechanism is being observed, and there is more than one way to arrange that.
