Hack 27 · Effortless Budgeting

App Test Drive—Find Your Fit

The app test drive is a deliberate month of trialling two or three budgeting apps to find the one you keep opening, then deleting the rest. Which app is objectively best matters far less than which one you personally stick with. Choosing on stickiness rather than features is what separates people who budget for years from people who budget for three weeks.

How to do it

  1. Pick two or three apps with genuinely different approaches.
  2. Use each for a few weeks and notice which you open without forcing yourself.
  3. Commit to the one that stuck and delete the others.

What it typically saves

Turns budgeting into a lasting habit instead of a series of abandoned apps.

Questions people ask

Is not using several apps better?

No. Split attention means none of them has a complete picture, and maintaining two systems is how people end up maintaining neither.

What if none of them stick?

That is a real answer, and it points you toward a simpler method. Some people do far better with reverse budgeting and no app at all.

Should I pay for one?

Only after the trial proves you use it. A subscription to an app you abandon is exactly the kind of charge these hacks exist to eliminate.
