Hack 16 · Stop Wasting Money

Use a Refillable Drink Bottle

Carrying a refillable bottle or travel mug replaces bought drinks with ones you fill at home for almost nothing. The saving is small each time but repeats nearly every day, and it removes the stop where other impulse purchases usually get added. Most people save around $300 a year, plus the plastic they no longer buy.

How to do it

  1. Buy one bottle good enough that you actually want to carry it.
  2. Fill it before you leave the house, every time.
  3. Keep a spare where you most often forget it.

What it typically saves

Typically $300 or more a year, plus the waste you avoid.

Questions people ask

Does the bottle pay for itself?

Usually within a few weeks. Even a relatively expensive bottle is cheaper than a couple of months of bought drinks.

Why does a nicer bottle matter?

Because you carry it. A bottle you dislike stays in a cupboard, and an unused bottle saves nothing regardless of price.

Is the real saving just the drink?

No, and that is the underrated part. The stop you skip is where snacks and other unplanned purchases usually get added.
