Hack 5 · Savings Foundations

The Windfall Split

The Windfall Split is a rule you set in advance: any unexpected money is divided in half, with one half going straight to savings or investments and the other half spent freely. It works because it removes the decision at the moment you are most tempted to spend it all. Applied to refunds, bonuses, and gifts, it converts irregular money into real progress without making you feel deprived.

How to do it

  1. Decide the split before any windfall arrives, not after.
  2. Move the savings half the same day the money lands.
  3. Spend the rest without guilt or second-guessing.

What it typically saves

Turns half of every unexpected dollar into permanent progress.

Questions people ask

Does it have to be an even split?

No. The number matters far less than deciding it in advance, because a rule set ahead of time is what stops the whole windfall disappearing.

What counts as a windfall?

Any money outside your normal pay: refunds, bonuses, rebates, gifts, or a side gig payout. If you were not counting on it, the rule applies.

What if I have debt?

Send the savings half at high-interest debt instead. The logic is identical, and paying down expensive debt is a guaranteed return.
