Hack 2 · Savings Foundations
The 7-Day Expense Reset
The 7-Day Expense Reset is a one-week exercise where you record every single purchase, then cut the three that returned the least value to you. It works because most spending leaks are invisible until they are written down in one place. A single week of tracking typically surfaces $25 to $50 a week in spending you will not miss.
How to do it
- Record every purchase for seven straight days, with no editing or judging.
- At week's end, mark the three purchases that gave you the least back.
- Cap or cut just those three for the following week.
What it typically saves
Typically $25 to $50 a week in spending you do not miss.
Questions people ask
Do I need an app to do this?
No. A notes app or a scrap of paper works. An app only helps because it captures purchases automatically, which means fewer forgotten entries by day five.
Why only one week?
A week is long enough to show your real pattern and short enough that you actually finish it. Month-long tracking is where most people quit.
What if nothing looks wasteful?
Then rank by regret instead of by size. There is almost always a bottom three, and cutting the bottom three is the whole exercise.
