Hack 18 · Stop Wasting Money

No-Buy Social Month

A no-buy social month is a public commitment to buy nothing in one chosen category for thirty days. Telling other people is the active ingredient, because social accountability makes you far more likely to finish. Most participants find they missed very little and identify a few hundred to a thousand dollars in habitual spending they can permanently cut.

How to do it

  1. Choose one specific category rather than a general spending freeze.
  2. Tell at least one person, or do it alongside them.
  3. At the end, review what you actually missed before resuming anything.

What it typically saves

Typically $200 to $1,000 a year in habits identified and dropped.

Questions people ask

Why one category instead of everything?

A single category is specific enough to be unambiguous and narrow enough to finish. Total freezes fail because the rules get fuzzy fast.

Does telling people really matter?

It is the biggest single factor. Commitments made out loud to someone who will ask about them survive far longer than private ones.

What happens after the month?

Review before resuming. The value is discovering which purchases you genuinely missed, which is information you only get by stopping.
