Learn Sunk Cost Wisdom

Sunk cost wisdom is the discipline of ignoring money already spent when deciding what to do next, because that money is gone either way. It stops you from continuing an unused subscription, a bad purchase, or a failing plan just to justify what you already paid. Applied consistently, it closes the leaks that people keep open purely out of regret.

How to do it

  1. Ask what you would choose if you were starting fresh today.
  2. Ignore what you already paid, since it is unrecoverable either way.
  3. Cancel or stop, and treat the loss as already taken.

What it typically saves

Stops ongoing losses you are only continuing to justify past spending.

Questions people ask

Is not quitting just wasting what I paid?

The money was spent regardless of what you do now. Continuing adds new cost to an old one rather than recovering anything.

Where does this show up most?

Unused subscriptions, memberships, courses, and gadgets. Anything with an ongoing cost that you keep because of what it cost to start.

Does this apply to investments too?

Yes, and it is harder there. Holding a bad position to avoid realizing a loss is the same error in a more expensive setting.
