Hack 20 · Stop Wasting Money

7-Day Waitlist

The 7-day waitlist is a rule that any nonessential purchase above a threshold you set goes on a list for a week before you are allowed to buy it. The delay lets the impulse fade, and a large share of listed items simply stop appealing. People who use it consistently roughly halve their impulse purchases.

How to do it

  1. Set a dollar threshold above which the rule always applies.
  2. Add anything that qualifies to one list instead of buying it.
  3. Review the list after a week and buy only what still matters.

What it typically saves

Roughly halves impulse purchases above your threshold.

Questions people ask

What threshold should I use?

Low enough to catch your usual impulse range, high enough that the rule does not cover groceries. Most people land somewhere in the tens of dollars.

What if the sale ends before the week is up?

Let it end. An offer that only works if you decide immediately is the exact purchase this rule exists to catch.

Does the list have to be in an app?

No, one list anywhere works. What matters is that it is a single list you actually revisit, not scattered notes you never open.
